Managing risk
Our aim is to have the best possible health care for the people of Grampian. However, no matter how dedicated and professional our staff, health care is a complicated business and so risk is to be expected.
Risk is not always bad. Responsible risk-taking can bring rewards and improve the quality of our services. However, we have to balance that against risks which may stop us being able to provide safe, good quality services.
Growing numbers of the public in the world's developed countries are asking for improvements in dealing with these risks. It is good business practice and a requirement of the NHS that we have a plan to manage risk.
Our risk management strategy aims to manage risk as part of our day-to-day work. We aim to create a way of working that focuses on assessing and preventing issues, rather than reacting to a situation and then trying to solve the problem.
We believe that working in this way will help us:
- Protect the safety of our patients, staff and the public
- Reduce the risks which could affect how we deliver services
- Maintain our reputation, look after our finances, and help us to provide the best services
- Managing risk should be done by everyone and our strategy applies to every member of staff
In a nutshell it:
- Sets out what we think about managing risk
- Says who is responsible for what
- Explains our procedures, such as how we record incidents and the lessons we have learnt
- Outlines how we work with risk day-to-day
