Equality and Diversity: Interpretation services
Definition: interpretation is changing the spoken word from one language to another.
'Face to face' interpretation
NHS Grampian has funded and provided support to partner agencies to help them recruit and train 'face to face' interpreters. Working with the Grampian Regional Equality Council (GREC) and One World Lingo (OWL) the numbers have been increased to 154 as at January 2020. Most recently, 8 Arabic/English interpreters have been trained in advance of the arrival of new Syrian Scots to Grampian.
Telephone interpretation
The 'Language Line' telephone interpretation service gives access to expert interpreters, on the telephone, in 60-90 seconds, for 170 different languages. Language Line is now live in over 1089 locations within NHS Grampian, however, demand for staff training and new access points continues to grow.
Before Language Line is introduced into an area, the preparatory work required is:
- Identification of every access point where the service is required
- Provision of training to the front line staff who will use the service
- Overcome any technical problems
- Provide Access Kits for each access point, containing everything required
In 2018, NHS Grampian staff used the 'Language Line' service on 6,875 occasions. The roll out of Mobile 'Language Line' Access Kits for use by staff in the homes of patients who do not have a fixed landline, will continue. 101 Conference Call Unit have also been issued for group work.
