Introduction

You may feel nervous or unsure when submitting a report of a racist or discrimination incident. This is the first step you can do to raise an issue and make the organisation aware of staff experiences. Support will be available to help you make your own choice on how you want to deal or resolve the issue – informal or formal approach.

Racist incident is when it intended or likely to intimidate, offend or harm an individual because of their ethnic origin, colour, race, religion or nationality. Discrimination is when someone is treated less favourably because of a protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010. Harassment is an incident intended or likely to intimidate, offend or harm an individual or group.

(Any feedback and complaints with any aspect of the service you receive, please contact NHS Grampian Feedback Service).

We will also respect if you only want to report the incident anonymously or you don’t want it investigated further. The information you will share will help NHS Grampian understand and monitor cases of racist, discrimination, bullying and harassment incidents.

Keep a record of the incident – simple and stick to fact. Date, time, place, who was there, what happened, what you did and how you felt.

Anyone who experienced or witnessed race or discrimination incident in the workplace will be supported by NHS Grampian. Staff are encouraged to report the incident, raise the issue and work to try and resolve the problem.

Issues at work can be raised informally with the employer and can be resolved quickly without going through a formal procedure. However, for some serious issues, staff may choose to raise a formal grievance procedure.

As a member of staff or student, you have options on how you want to deal or resolve the issue and whatever choice you make,

  • It will be respected and treated as confidential
  • The issue/complaint is taken seriously
  • The matter will be handled fairly and sensitively
