Encouraging Speak Up Culture

We Care - Speak Up Banner

Speak Up Week gives us an opportunity to reflect on cultures within our teams and workplaces.

We are all architects of our teams’ cultures, we are all responsible for creating work environments that are inclusive, supportive and where team members feel able to speak up, that is to share their ideas and concerns, point out problems and opportunities for improvement.

There is no one uniform culture in NHS Grampian but many workplace cultures, all reflected in our attitudes, beliefs, behaviours and routines. There are however things that we want to be common for all colleagues in Grampian, so we all consistently experience a workplace where people are able to thrive and be safe and well through work. This is explicitly expressed in ‘Our Commitment to Culture’ statement:

‘Our Commitment to Culture’ statement

We have developed the Commitment to Culture’ resource pack (networked devices only), which can help you to start your local conversations about development of speak-up culture in yoru teams and services.

Resources to support ‘Speak Up’ culture

  1. ‘Our Commitment to Culture’ Wheel (pdf) - Use this tool to explore each of NHS Grampian’s values and culture aims and how they can be encouraged and embedded in yoru team to support speak up culture.

  2. Speaking-up behaviours for leaders: Do’s and don’ts (pdf) - This document sets out the ways you can role-model behaviour that leads to a healthy speaking-up culture.

  3. Three Ways to Create Psychological Safety in Health Care video (4:21 min watch). Psychological safety is a key factor in healthy teams that invite speaking up. It is defines as a belief that one will not be punished or humiliated for speaking up with ideas, questions, concerns, or mistakes and that the team is safe for interpersonal risk-taking.
