Data Driven Innovation Award
Published: 03/03/2025 14:53On Tuesday 18th February NHS Grampian and the collaborative team behind GEMINI, were the very proud winners of the Data Driven Innovation Award at the Holyrood Connect Digital Health and Care Awards 2025. This award recognises the work undertaken on project GEMINI and is an outstanding achievement for Innovation in NHS Grampian.

The GEMINI (Grampian’s Evaluation of Mia in an Innovative National breast screening Initiative) project was devised to understand the impact of introducing AI into the breast screening programme at NHS Grampian.
The GEMINI trial, led and hosted by NHS Grampian, helped doctors find 10.4 percent more cancers than in routine practice by using the AI tool to assist radiologists. Together, health, academic and industry professionals demonstrated that integrating AI into breast screening could improve cancer detection, maintain recall rates, and reduce workload by up to 36 percent.
Congratulations to the whole team involved in GEMINI, as this is so well deserved for all of their dedication and hard work. A shining example of triple helix collaboration, the multidisciplinary team, included experts from NHS Grampian, the University of Aberdeen and Kheiron Medical Technologies Ltd. – which is now part of DeepHealth.
