Aims of Engagement

Building on previous good engagement methods created by NHS Grampian, guidance from the NHS Grampian Engagement and Participation Committee (EPC), and the King’s Fund we developed a Communication and Engagement Plan to support the development of the Plan for the Future.

In particular, we accepted we would have to work differently to move away from what had been done before, in order to develop a different way of connecting with the public to support useful and meaningful ‘conversations’ and to hear from the seldom heard and those with experience of using services.

Although we had two phases of engagement in 2021, we’ve always said these were just the start of our conversations with our staff, public and partners to shape where we want to be in the future for our health and care services.

Key to developing the Plan for the Future was getting the views of our staff, partners and public on what matters to them. Specific aims were to:

  • Focus on hearing from as many different people, community groups and staff and focus on ways to hear from those in Grampian that views are seldom heard.
  • Reach key groups, members of the public and community groups to hear views and experiences of using health services before and during the first 18 months of COVID-19. What worked well and what caused worries or concerns, and what is important for people’s health and wellbeing in the future.
  • Continue to work with other partners (public, statutory, voluntary and independent sectors), to increase engagement opportunities while reducing the risk of the same questions being asked more than once to the same group of people.

Key Success Criteria

  • Good involvement from people in engagement activities
  • Assist with partners’ strategies and engagement processes
  • Ensure different approaches to increase participation/engagement by groups
  • Ensure everyone’s voice is heard who wishes to take part

Measuring Success

We have used the National Standards for Engagement when planning for and looking back over our engagement to date and will continue to do so to demonstrate good practice.

Success will be reflected by the level of ongoing engagement and the development of our plan with staff, public and communities.
