At NHS Grampian, we are committed to creating a healthier future – not just for our patients, but for our planet. Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. From reducing our carbon footprint to promoting greener practices across our services, we are dedicated to protecting the environment while delivering high-quality healthcare.

Healthcare & Sustainability

Healthcare and sustainability are closely connected because both focus on protecting people’s wellbeing. A healthy environment supports healthy lives, and sustainable practices help ensure that future generations can access clean air, water, and resources. In healthcare, sustainability means using resources wisely, reducing waste, and lowering our environmental impact to help prevent climate-related health problems.

Climate change can make existing health challenges worse and create new challenges for our service. It affects our health in different ways, from increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses to spreading diseases. Factors like age, income, and where we live can make some people more vulnerable, potentially deepening health inequalities. As the climate continues to change, it’s crucial to understand how it impacts our health and what we can do to protect those most at risk.

Our Vision for a Sustainable NHS

We believe that healthcare and environmental stewardship go hand in hand. Our vision is to create a sustainable healthcare system that benefits everyone – from patients to staff to the communities we serve. By embracing sustainability, we aim to:

  • Reduce carbon emissions: Through energy-efficient buildings, renewable energy use, efficient use of equipment and resources, and low/zero emissions transportation.
  • Minimise waste: Implementing recycling programmes and reducing single-use plastics to reduce environmental impact.
  • Promote sustainable procurement: Sourcing ethical and environmentally responsible products and services.
  • Cultivate our greenspaces: Integrating nature and biodiversity into our healthcare facilities to promote well-being.

Our Initiatives

NHS Grampian is leading the way in sustainable healthcare through various initiatives, including:

  • Climate Emergency & Sustainability Strategy – Our overarching plans to reduce carbon emissions and achieve net-zero.
  • Sustainable Travel – Encouraging cycling, walking, and public transport to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution.
  • Energy Efficiency – Investing in renewable energy sources, LED lighting, and zero/low emission systems in our facilities.
  • Waste Reduction – Cutting down on medical waste through innovative recycling programmes and promoting reusable alternatives.

Let’s take care of our health and our planet, one step at a time.
