Our Ambition
Our ambition is to become a service which is both environmentally and socially sustainable. A service that improves the opportunities, life chances and wellbeing of every citizen in our country and fully contributes to a more cohesive, resilient, and net-zero economy and is conscious of our role both locally, nationally and globally. To do this, NHS Grampian aims to:
- Reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its activities, those activities under its control and from electricity, steam and heat purchased by it in line with the Scottish Government’s targets;
- Maximise/increase its contribution to reducing emissions which are linked to NHS activities, but are from sources which the NHS does not own or control, to net-zero by 2040;
- Mitigate the effects of climate change on the services it provides;
- Establish a culture of stewardship, where we are mindful of the resources we use to provide healthcare and deliver more sustainable care;
- Establish NHS Grampian as part of the Circular Economy through designing out waste and pollution, keeping products and materials in use and contributing to the regeneration of natural systems;
- Increase our contribution to promoting greenspace, tackling the ecological emergency and restoring biodiversity;
- Minimise the health service’s use of physical and natural resources; and
- Ensure that we, as an integral part of our communities, contribute to the achievement of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).
Our Targets
NHS Grampian is committed to promoting health and wellbeing while also supporting the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). Some key goals include:
- Becoming a net-zero health service by 2040, or sooner if possible.
- Making sure our facilities and services are climate-resilient, especially when it comes to extreme weather.
- Building a culture of stewardship, where we use natural resources responsibly to provide sustainable healthcare.
- Embracing the circular economy, focusing on reducing waste, reusing materials, and minimising pollution.
- Contributing to tackling the ecological emergency and helping restore biodiversity.
These efforts are part of a larger mission to ensure NHS Grampian leads the way in creating a healthier planet.
