Coping psychologically and emotionally
Coming into hospital can lead to lots of different emotions.
Common feelings include:
- Worry
- Fear
- Sadness
- Frustration
- Disappointment
Such feelings are normal in an unfamiliar and busy place, especially when having surgery. Teams caring for you want to help you get home as soon as possible but sometimes surgery may be delayed or recovery can take longer. Sometimes staff recommendations can cause some frustration but are in place to aid recovery long term.
Think about how you have coped with stress in the past. Simple breathing and relaxation techniques can be helpful in managing these signs. Bringing in some activities you enjoy or listening to music can also be helpful. You may find you’ve lots of questions or concerns for the healthcare staff. If you can, write them down so you can share them with your treating team.
Signs of distress may include:
- Sleeplessness
- Racing heart
- Feeling hot
- Experiencing hopelessness
- Worrying thoughts about the future
