Recovery in the Ward After Surgery
When you arrive back on the ward after your surgery, a nurse will continue to check your blood pressure, pulse, oxygen levels, pain levels and any other care needs including checking your wound. Your nurse will advise you on when you can eat, drink, and get out of bed safely.
Download this PDF leaflet providing information on why it is important to get up, get dressed and get moving after surgery.
If you are having a more complex surgery, recovery on the ward will also include seeing other medical professionals including Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Dietitians, Speech and Language Therapists, Pharmacists, and specialist nurses such as Pain Nurses and Stoma Nurses.
You will have an appropriate review after surgery. Your recovery will involve regular blood pressure checks and as soon as you are fully awake your designated nurse will support you, make sure you are comfortable and familiar with your surroundings.
Although you have only recently been admitted it is important for us to begin planning your discharge home or transfer to another place of care. Whilst you are in the hospital, we will ask you and your family/carers about your needs when leaving the hospital. If you wish your family members to have a discussion regarding this or your medical care, please allocate one person to speak with a member of the nursing or medical team. Please be aware that if this is not face to face only minimal information can be given via the telephone.
