Your Theatre Journey
The theatre suite nursing team will check your ID and ask a few questions. You will be accompanied by a member of the team and most people if able to will walk to theatre.
Arrival in Theatre
When you arrive at the theatre suite, we will take good care of you and make sure you are comfortable such as give you a warm blanket and a pillow. The atmosphere in the theatre is calm. Prior to your anaesthetic, your anaesthetist and their assistant will talk you through everything they do. Questions may feel overwhelming however these checks are mandatory and for your safety.
Theatre Recovery
Following your operation, you will be transferred to a recovery area in the theatre suite. Recovery is a specialised unit to assure you recover from your anaesthetic, your pain managed, and you are stable to return to the ward. This area may contain both male and female patients who, like you, will be recovering from their operation. Maintaining your privacy and dignity during this time is our priority.
Patients sometimes report feeling scared and overwhelmed following their surgery. This is unsurprising in an environment that is usually very busy with bright lights and noises and other patients. Nurses will usually do regular checks of things like temperature and blood pressure, and depending upon your surgery you may have oxygen, a drip or urinary catheter etc which will have been discussed with you in your pre-operative assessment. Levels of pain are also assessed and controlled in this area.
