'Volunteers compliment the multi-disciplinary team to enhance quality of life for both patient and carer'

What can I do?

Supported by the Volunteer Co-ordinator, volunteers work in the day unit, their time being offered in hours/weeks/months or when called upon as appropriate in areas including:

  • Driving patients to and from The Oaks
  • Reception - answering the telephone, photocopying and admin support
  • Day Unit - helping to serve lunch, join in activities, coffee and tea duties, spending time with patients*
  • Therapists - qualified and experienced Complementary therapists, Beauty therapists, Hairdressers
  • Counsellors
  • Creative activities - Gardening, arts and crafts, music therapy, specialist skills and knowledge

We will offer a choice of placement suited to your interests, skills and abilities.

By becoming a volunteer at The Oaks you will be contributing to enhancing the care and support of patients and their families, improving their quality of life and creating a warm, welcoming and friendly environment.

How do I become a part of the team?

To become a member of the volunteer team please contact the Volunteer Co-ordinator on 01343 562476 or by email on angela.stewart2@nhs.scot. After discussion she will send/e-mail you out a volunteer application pack.

Once the Volunteer Co-ordinator has received your completed application form and 2 references, she will contact you to arrange a suitable interview time.

All volunteers are Disclosed and receive an induction and clear outlines of their tasks.

Please note the following:

All applicants will be required to provide two character references from people they have known for a minimum of 2 years.

We do not advise people to become volunteers if they have suffered bereavement in the last 2 years or are currently caring for a cancer patient.

We do not advise previous patients to become volunteers unless they have been discharged for 2 years.

All applicants must give at least a 6 month commitment.

You will also be asked to provide information of any convictions in relation to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.

Therapists will be required to produce qualification certificates and a valid public liability insurance certificate.

Drivers will be required to produce a copy of their driving licence, current MOT certificate and car insurance.

The Oaks Volunteers

There are currently 50 volunteers registered at The Oaks. 

NHS Grampian Volunteer Training covers Health & Safety, Infection Prevention & Control, Confidentiality, Safeguarding, Equality & Diversity.

Volunteers are also offered face-to-face training sessions which include Palliative Care, Hand Hygiene, Fire Safety, Hand Care & Massage and Wheelchair training.
