Remembering Nan by honouring Libby
Published: 02/09/2024 11:00Much loved and devoted mum, grandmother and great-grandmother, Joan McAdam is being remembered by her family by honouring the nurse who cared for her.
Libby Catto, who is part of the nursing team on Ward 7 at Dr Gray’s Hospital in Elgin, received the DAISY Award for nurses and midwives during a get together with Joan’s family recently.
Grandson Terry McAdam who nominated Libby for the Award explained: “Nan was admitted to Dr Gray’s after a fall during the festive period. She was in her 90s and had always lived independently so it was difficult but I quickly realised Libby would always go above and beyond the call of duty to deliver the care Nan was in need of.”
Joan received end of life care and sadly passed away on 28th January this year.
Terry added: "Libby was a breath of fresh air for my wife and I at such a sad and hard time for us. She never failed to give us reassurance and nothing was ever a problem to her. I would like to thank all the staff members at Dr Gray’s on both Wards 5 and 7, and especially Libby. Not only did she deliver compassionate and professional care to my grandmother, but she also offered this to us. Thank you, Libby; you are an asset to the NHS.”
Terry’s wife Kirsty is a district nurse covering Buckie and Cullen. She said: “We couldn't have asked for anything better with the care Nan received and the attention she got. We know she was in good hands and was peaceful at the end of her life. It's never easy to nurse people that are in the profession or whose family members are but if Libby experienced any of those anxieties we would never have known. She was so kind to us.”

Libby commented: “I am over the moon to have received the DAISY award; it really means so much.”
NHS Grampian joined healthcare facilities around the world last year by partnering with the DAISY Foundation to help recognise the exceptional care and compassion given by nurses and midwives.
DAISY stands for Diseases Attacking the Immune System and the not-for-profit organisation was formed in 1999 in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. The award is now recognised for its success in promoting patient and family-centred care, improving job satisfaction and retention, and celebrating the crucial work nurses and midwives do.
