Primary care empirical antimicrobial guidance
For Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) antimicrobial policies and guidance - click here
The prescribing guidance for the empirical treatment of infections in Primary Care covers prescribing options for both adults and children. In line with national recommendations there is significant restriction on use of the 4C antibiotics (cephalosporins, co-amoxiclav, clindamycin and ciprofloxacin and the other quinolones).
If you have any queries or have feedback or suggestions regarding the guidelines, please contact the Antimicrobial Management Team via gram.antibioticpharmacists@nhs.scot.

Self management of cough, cystitis, earache, sinusitis, sore throat
NHS Grampian is supporting measures to help reduce unnecessary antibiotic prescribing for self-limiting upper respiratory tract infections. Antibiotics are not the answer in most cases of cough, sore throat, sinusitis, earache and cystitis. To download Patient Information Leaflets (PILs) or self-care advice please visit the Self-Help for Coughs, Cold and More webpage.
Without antibiotics - non-prescription pads
For patients attending a GP practice for a self-limiting upper respiratory tract infection a "non-prescription" pad is also available to help promote self management in those patients who are unlikely to benefit from antibiotics. Practices can obtain an English version online or via their CHP or practice pharmacist. Electronic versions in English, Latvian, Lithuanian, Polish and Russian are accessible online at:
