Role and what it involves

I have been working in the specialism of MSK and Biomechanics, whilst laterally entering into Orthopaedics. This is an exciting role creating links from podiatry services into Orthopaedics. It is about helping patients seek the appropriate treatment they required, at an appropriate time. I like having the time to understand the patient, their concerns and their desires. Using advanced skills, I can help patients to better understand their options and help them with appropriate management to remain happy and active.

What I find most rewarding about my role?

There is nothing better than helping a patient understand what is going on. It’s like you give them some form of power. They become able to rationalise what they feel, make sense of the situation and make justified choices about their health.

Why I became a Podiatrist

I love the expertise knowledge that a Podiatrist has, focused to one area of the body, yet highly related to all things medical and functional. A Podiatrist has a role to play in every individual, at some point through their life and therefore having the opportunity to positively impact people’s lives is what attracted me to Podiatry.

Why should someone choose Podiatry?

A career in Podiatry gives you endless opportunities. The challenge that comes with this job enables great satisfaction at the end of the day! You can find your love and your niche and have a very happy career!

Role and what it involves

I am currently a Specialist Podiatrist within Aberdeen city supporting high risk patients with wound care and education. I work in a variety of settings within the community doing clinical work at health centres and multidisciplinary clinics and home visits to the most vulnerable high risk patients. I also take an administrative role being a vetter for my department and helping control our twitter page.

What I find most rewarding about my role?

I love being able to support my patients not just with their feet but with lifestyle changes which can make a huge difference to their lives.

Why I became a Podiatrist

I had always wanted to work in some form of healthcare but was really unsure of the specialties until a Podiatrist came to speak to us in high school. I realised what an interesting career this would be and have pursued this ever since. My most recent achievement progressing into a Specialism which I find extremely fulfilling.

Why should someone choose Podiatry?

It is a very fulfilling and exciting career that never gets boring. It is forever developing and expanding with changes to technology and research. We are a vital part of healthcare not only for our patients but for the wider multidisciplinary team we work with.
