Magnet and Pathway to Excellence
We’re On Our Journey to Excellence with ANCC Magnet® and Pathway to Excellence® Recognition!
At NHS Grampian, we are proud to announce our pursuit of both the ANCC Magnet Recognition and Pathway to Excellence designations—globally renowned for fostering nursing excellence, professional pride, and the delivery of the highest standards of care to our patients.
ANCC Magnet® Recognition Programme
The Magnet Recognition Programme is a globally renowned designation for care excellence. The programme was developed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to recognise organisations worldwide where nursing leaders successfully align their strategic goals to improve patient outcomes.
Magnet provides a roadmap to nursing excellence that benefits the entire organisation. It fosters a culture of shared decision-making, education, and professional development at every career stage. Teams are encouraged to embrace evidence-based practice, research, and innovation, allowing greater autonomy at the bedside.
By pursuing Magnet status for Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital, we are demonstrating our commitment to continuous improvement and excellence in nursing practice. This is the first step in NHS Grampian's wider Magnet journey, and we're proud to lead the way as the first in Scotland. The leadership team truly wants RACH to be recognised as a great place to work, where colleagues are empowered to make positive changes and are recognised and rewarded for their contributions.

ANCC Pathway to Excellence® Programme
The Pathway to Excellence Programme provides a framework for developing a positive practice environment that supports staff needs and promotes high standards of care. It recognises healthcare organisations committed to providing a healthy workplace for staff. Developed by the ANCC, Pathway to Excellence supports job satisfaction, professional growth, and exceptional patient care.
Colleagues across our Mental Health and Learning Disability Service are working towards Pathway to Excellence designation. This is the first step in NHS Grampian's wider Pathway to Excellence journey, and we're proud to lead the way as the first in Scotland. The leadership team is dedicated to fostering a practice environment that empowers and engages staff. Through this process, we demonstrate how our commitment to shared decision-making, leadership, safety, quality, professional development, and wellbeing is embedded into our daily practice. These six standards provide the foundation for a workplace where nurses feel valued and are encouraged to influence change and improve care continually.

What This Means for Our Nurses and Midwives
Our journey towards these recognitions reflects our passion for creating an environment where nurses and midwives can thrive. With shared decision-making councils, rewards and recognition, and professional growth opportunities, we ensure that every voice is heard, and all staff can contribute to improving care.
We have already implemented and embedded many examples of care excellence, including:
- Professional Development: Opportunities for career advancement through programmes such as preceptorship, top-up degrees, and leadership training.
- A Clear Vision and Direction: Through our NMAHP Framework and NMAHP Professional Practice Model.
- Shared Decision-Making: Ensuring that nurses and midwives have direct influence over policies and practices.
- Rewards and Recognition: Including DAISY Awards, Inspiring NMAHPs Awards, and Celebrating Excellence Days.
Join Us on This Exciting Journey
We are committed to achieving both Magnet Recognition and Pathway to Excellence designations, demonstrating our dedication to delivering outstanding care to our patients while creating a supportive and enriching work environment for our staff. This is just the beginning of an exciting chapter for NHS Grampian, where we will continue to celebrate the outstanding contributions of our nurses and midwives.
