Who is a Brain Health Service for?

The service is for anyone, regardless of age, who might have concerns about brain health and wants to find out more about reducing their risk of developing dementia in the future.

Risk factors for dementia

Risk factors are aspects of your lifestyle, environment and genetic background that increase the likelihood of getting a disease such as dementia.
Risk factors for dementia include:

  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Social isolation
  • Smoking
  • Lower level of mental skills and stimulation
  • Diabetes
  • Depression
  • Obesity
  • Traumatic brain injury (concussion, skull fracture, brain injury or bleed)
  • Physical inactivity
  • Hearing impairment
  • Poor diet
  • Air pollution
  • Alcohol consumption (more than 14 units per week)
  • Poor sleep patterns

If you have one or more of these risk factors it does not necessarily mean you will develop dementia.

Is this service set up to diagnose dementia?

No, we already have memory clinics which are set up to detect dementia. These brain health services focus on someone's future risk for dementia and putting in place plans to help reduce that risk. The brain health service works closely with memory clinics to refer any patients who might be considered to benefit from an assessment for possible dementia.
