Prescriptions and Prescribing Medicines

Prescribing Medicines

It is essential that medicines are prescribed appropriately:

All medicines prescribed should be:

  • prescribed in line with national and local guidelines and policies to ensure quality and cost-effective treatment.
  • be in line with NHS Grampian formulary – (list of medicines recommended for use)

  • be prescribed generically, i.e. by drug name, not brand name unless there is a clinical reason a brand should be prescribed.

  • reviewed regularly to ensure they are still required and are being effective
