Being Off Sick

This page gives you information on what to do if you are unable to attend work due to health.

The Attendance Policy is available here:

https://workforce.nhs.scot/policies/attendance-policy-overview/

Staff need to follow all points outlined in the procedure, the first steps are:

  • Advise your manager (or agreed alternative contact) before your normal start-time.
  • Make contact by telephone unless other contact arrangements have been agreed.
  • Only use a third party to report your absence in exceptional circumstances where it is not practicably possible for you to do so yourself
  • Make every effort to keep in contact with your manager while you are on sick leave.

If your department has a local procedure in place you must follow it. If you do not know if you have a local procedure in place please speak to your manager.

You will find more information in the Attendance Policy Guide for Employees if you follow the link below:

The aim of this policy is to make sure managers throughout NHS Scotland adopt a fair, consistent and supportive approach to employees with health problems and to make sure that sickness absence levels are maintained within those acceptable to NHS Scotland.

While NHS Grampian aims to secure the attendance at work of all employees, it is recognised that a certain level of absence due to sickness may occur and that the sensitive management of health problems and the promotion of good health contributes to staff retention.
