Medical and Dental Employees

Medical and Dental Employees have a number of medical contracts, up to date information can be found at:
www.msg.scot.nhs.uk/pay/medical

A brief summary of each can be found below.

Consultants:

Since 2004 the vast majority of hospital and dental consultants in Scotland have been subject to the pay, terms and conditions associated with the new consultant 2004 contract. These terms and conditions have remained effectively unchanged since that time. Talks are now planned which may impact on aspects of the current terms and conditions (see Consultant Current Work Streams).

Resident Doctors* and Dentists in Training

Unlike Consultants and SAS doctors residence doctors’ terms and conditions are not concentrated into one overall contract. They are located in a range of provisions agreed since 2000. The other UK countries agreed a new contract for this group of doctors in 2016. Scotland did not take part in these negotiations and MSG are now engaged with BMA Scotland on a review of all contractual provision related to resident doctors. All parties to the negotiations share the aim of agreeing a modernised set of contractual arrangements which are fit for purpose both bow and in the future.

* Note: As part of discussions on 2024/25 pay between the Scottish Government and BMA Scotland it was agreed that doctors formerly known as junior doctors would be referred to as resident doctors. This applies to all former junior doctors, not only doctors whoa re in training.

Speciality Doctors and Associate Specialists:

In August 2021 MSG entered into negotiations with BMA Scotland’s SSASC committee on reform of the 2008 SAS contract.  The other three UK countries had conducted and concluded negotiations for a new contract, with Scotland deciding to have specific discussions for NHSS.

Negotiations concluded in September 2022, and following agreement between all parties circulars were issued on 1st December 2022 setting out amended terms and conditions and pay for Specialty Doctors and introducing a new Specialist Doctor grade in NHS Scotland.

Salaried Dentist

It was agreed in 2009 that Scottish Government Health Directorates and NHS employers, represented by the Management Steering Group and the British Dental Association should work together to align the terms and conditions of service of existing staff in the two organisations.

Negotiations have now been concluded and an agreement has been reached on a common set of terms and conditions of service for dentists working within the new Scottish Public Dental Service.
